Monte Carlo simulations in emission tomography and GATE: An overview
نویسندگان
چکیده
Monte Carlo simulations are nowadays an essential tool in emission tomography (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography— SPECT and Positron Emission Tomography—PET), for assisting system design and optimizing imaging and processing protocols. Several Monte Carlo simulation software are currently available for modeling SPECT and PET configurations. This paper presents an overview of current trends concerning Monte Carlo simulations in SPECT and PET. The evolution of the place of Monte Carlo simulations in SPECT and PET since 1995 is studied, together with the evolution of the codes used for Monte Carlo simulations. New features present in current codes are described, and new applications of Monte Carlo simulations in SPECT and PET are reviewed. Finally, upcoming developments in the field of Monte Carlo simulations in SPECT or PET are discussed. In this paper, a particular emphasis is given to the GATE code, as it is the most recent and publicly available code for Monte Carlo simulations appropriate for both SPECT and PET applications. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملPerformance comparison of four commercial GE discovery PET/CT scanners: A monte carlo study using GATE
Combined PET/CT scanners now play a major role in medicine for in vivo imaging in oncology, cardiology, neurology, and psychiatry. As the performance of a scanner depends not only on the scintillating material but also on the scanner design, with regards to the advent of newer scanners, there is a need to optimize acquisition protocols as well as to compare scanner ...
متن کاملGATE: improving the computational efficiency
GATE is a software dedicated to Monte Carlo simulations in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). An important disadvantage of those simulations is the fundamental burden of computation time. This manuscript describes three different techniques in order to improve the efficiency of those simulations. Firstly, the implementation of variance red...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Study of the Effect of Backscatter Materail Thickness on 99mTc Source Response in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography
Introduction SPECT projections are contaminated by scatter radiation, resulting in reduced image contrast and quantitative errors. Backscatter constitutes a major part of the scatter contamination in lower energy windows. The current study is an evaluation of the effect of backscatter material on FWHM and image quality investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Materials and Methods SIMIND program...
متن کاملImage Optimization in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography by Hardware Modifications with Monte Carlo Simulation
Introduction: In Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), the projection data used for image reconstruction are distorted by several factors, including attenuation and scattering of gamma rays, collimator structure, data acquisition method, organ motion, and washout of radiopharmaceuticals. All these make reconstruction of a quantitative SPECT image very difficult. Simulation of a SP...
